Compare synthetic SNMP and syslog records for the same components. Keep identity and clock context with each observation when assessing service health.

Overview#

Lab class: Offline synthetic telemetry fixture

Fixture#

Use synthetic records showing a switch port/PoE transition, camera reboot, clock warning, stream loss, recorder retry and recovery. Include duplicate syslog, delayed trap/inform and one missing expected heartbeat.

Procedure#

1. Record source identity, management protocol version/security model and time quality.
2. Normalise fields while preserving native OID/message and raw reference.
3. Correlate physical/link, device, protocol and application layers.
4. Distinguish trap/inform delivery, polled state and application event guarantees.
5. Identify whether SNMPv1/v2c community or unauthenticated UDP syslog would expose or permit alteration; document secure alternatives/support.
6. Build a root cause hypothesis without suppressing evidence that contradicts it.
7. Define alerts for missing expected telemetry and prolonged degraded state.

Evidence checklist#

• Fixture provenance, digest, represented topology, protocol versions, and security models recorded
• Native OIDs/messages preserved alongside normalised fields
• Source, occurrence, receive, and processing time plus clock quality retained
• Physical/link, device, protocol, and application evidence correlated without collapsing layers
• Trap, inform, poll, heartbeat, duplicate, delay, gap, and recovery semantics distinguished
• Confidentiality, authentication, integrity, replay, and source spoofing exposure documented
• Root cause hypothesis includes contradicting evidence and explicit uncertainty
